Why we use an ELD
Federal law (49 CFR Part 395, the FMCSA ELD mandate) requires most commercial drivers to log Hours of Service electronically instead of on paper. Arko Trans uses the Motive Driver App, paired with a Motive Vehicle Gateway device plugged into your truck's diagnostic port, to record your driving time automatically.
This orientation covers the four things every driver needs on day one: getting logged in, understanding duty status, completing inspections, and handling a roadside inspection. It ends with a short knowledge check.
Logging in & pairing your device
- Download the app. Search "Motive Driver" in the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) and install it.
- Log in. Use the email and temporary password from your Arko Trans invite email. You'll be prompted to set a new password on first login.
- Turn the engine on. The Vehicle Gateway needs power from the truck to broadcast.
- Pair via Bluetooth. The app should detect the Gateway automatically and connect within a few seconds — approve the Bluetooth pairing prompt if your phone asks.
- Confirm the connection. Once paired, your duty status will begin tracking automatically whenever the truck is moving.
Reading the Gateway's LED lights tells you its connection status at a glance:
Working normally, connected.
Gateway powered but not yet connected to the app.
Malfunction — notify dispatch right away.
Your duty status
Tap the status bar in the app to change your duty status. The app also switches itself automatically — always make sure the status on screen matches what you're actually doing.
You're done working and free to do as you please.
Resting in the sleeper compartment.
Working, but not behind the wheel — fueling, loading, paperwork.
Set automatically once the truck hits about 5 mph.
Special statuses — available if enabled by dispatch:
Moving the truck on private property. Counts as On Duty.
Authorized personal travel in the truck. Counts as Off Duty.
Pre-trip & post-trip inspections (DVIR)
Every driver completes a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report before and after each trip. It's fully digital in the app.
- Open Vehicle Inspection and select your vehicle (and trailer, if applicable).
- Choose Pre-trip or Post-trip depending on when you're inspecting.
- Work through the checklist. Mark each item "No defects" or "Defect found."
- Document any defect. Add a note describing it, and attach a photo if you can.
- Sign and save. Your e-signature certifies the report, which is automatically shared with the Arko Trans maintenance team.
If you're pulled in for a DOT inspection
Motive's DOT Inspection Mode hands an officer exactly what they need to see, without exposing the rest of your phone.
- Open the app menu and tap DOT Inspection Mode.
- Set an access code the first time — tap and hold "Begin Inspection" to create one. This keeps your personal data private while the officer reviews your logs.
- Tap Begin Inspection to let the officer swipe through your required log days directly on the screen.
- Or send your logs electronically. Tap Send Output File and choose web service or email (whichever the officer requests), or Send Logs to email/fax a copy.
When something's not working
Toggle Bluetooth off and on, or unplug and replug the Vehicle Gateway. Wait 30 seconds after the "Connect Bluetooth Accessory" message before trying again.
The Gateway itself has failed. Switch to paper logs immediately and call dispatch — don't keep driving unlogged.
Normal while moving 5+ mph. If it doesn't clear after you've stopped, force-close and reopen the app.
Call Arko Trans dispatch first — they can see your logs from the Fleet Dashboard and walk you through it, or escalate to Motive support if needed.
Quick knowledge check
You need all 10 correct to complete your orientation. Get one wrong and you can just try it again — no need to redo the whole quiz.
